Meeting with Xaverians of Great Britain
Frs. John Convery and Tom Welsh of the Great Britain Province
came to the USA Province to talk together about some practical ways our two
provinces could collaborate in some important areas, in view of the canonization
of Bishop Conforti on Oct. 23, 2011. Some similar collaborations are in place
with other English speaking missions, such as the Philippines, Sierra Leone,
Japan and Taiwan.
The areas discussed in the meeting which was held
on May 25, included Internet presence, various publications, and in particular
the publication and distribution of an English version of the newest book by Fr.
Augustus Luca on the life of Saint Guido M. Conforti, our founder (available
right now in Italian). Other projects considered in this meeting were the
possibility of sponsoring a
youth assembly, the production of youth resources for mission inspiration,
and a future collaborative study center on interfaith and intercultural
dialogue as a key challenge to global mission of the Catholic Church from the
Northern hemisphere. Frs. Chudy, Puopolo and Matteucig participated from the
USA.
Xaverian Missionaries overjoyed over founder's upcoming canonization
Although New Year's Day and 2011 are only days away, the
Xaverian Missionaries at the Provincial House here are already certain that the
new year will be the most joyful one in the order's long history. That's because
sometime next year, they expect to fly to Rome to join their fellow Xaverian missionaries
from around the world to witness a dream long in the making - the canonization
of the founder of their religious order, the Italian-born Blessed Guido Maria
Conforti, as a saint.

48th Dinner Dance, Berceto
On October 3, in Queens, New York the Berceto Foundation held
their 48th Annual Mission Banquet for the benefit of our
mission work worldwide.
The Berceto Foundation was founded in 1962 through a special occasion organized
by friends in New York to honor Fr. Bonardi, one of
the first Xaverian Missionaries who came for a visit at that time.
In this photo (from left to right) Ugo Conti, Anna Sabini and Anna
Conti (Pres.), chairpersons of this year banquet stand by a display of our Founder with
pictures of him visiting the town of Berceto in Italy during the 1920’s.
Over time the hard work of the Berceto Foundation has continued to contributed
enormously to the efforts in mission lands worldwide, 48 years and counting.
Mr. Bill Kearns visits our community
Our dear friend Mrs. Rose Kearns passed away in Florida this past July
15. Both Bill and Rose, together with their large family, originally donated
their house to us in Wayne, in 1967, which continues to serve as our Provincial
Headquarters.
The following are some excerpts of a letter that Fr. Carl Chudy, our Provincial,
wrote to the family on this occasion: “...We received news of Rose’s passing
away here in Wayne, your old homestead. ...I feel as though I know you and your
family intimately through all the stories that have been passed onto us.
...I cannot possibly imagine the depth of the pain and emptiness that you may be
feeling now with the loss of a lifelong partner, love, mother of many children,
and the many more lives touched by her in these many years.
...In the great loss you share with your family, there is also great joy in
coming to the climax of our life journey in Christ. There is something
comforting in death in this sense.
...The Xaverian Missionaries are with you in this time of grief and pain, and
hope to eternal life for her, and us all.”
Mr. Kearns expressed the desire to visit our Community in Wayne, which happened
on Sept. 26, with a special mass for Rose and the intentions of the Kearns
family, followed by a dinner together with the Xaverians. The strong faith of
Rose is an inspiration to all of us. May Our Lady of Peace carry her to the very
heart of God in heaven. Here is Fr. Bob pictured with Mr. Kearns.
