Japan: Hope for the Future
. Japan - Hope for the Future
The Catholic Church in Japan rushed to support victims of the
earthquake and tsunami with prayer, solidarity and practical aid. Japanese
bishops established an emergency center to coordinate humanitarian aid
operations in Sendai, the area most devastated by the March 11 earthquake and
tsunami.
The center is managed by Caritas Japan and draws on the resources of numerous
Catholic volunteers who have come forward in the wake of the disaster. “The
biggest buildings withstood the very strong earthquake. The greatest damage was
caused by the tsunami. The panorama of destruction is striking. Now we'll have
to roll up our shirtsleeves. People are expecting our help,” said Fr. Daisuke
Narui, executive director of Caritas Japan. Read more articles from Xaverian
Missionaries in Japan, Fr. Piergiorgio Manni, Provincial Superior, and Fr. Mike
De Rocha.
“Saint for Our Times” is another article on Guido Maria Conforti, founder of the
Xaverian Missionaries, Bishop of Parma and Archbishop of Ravenna, who will be
proclaimed Saint by Pope Benedict XVI on World Mission Sunday October 23, 2011
at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
The centerpiece portraits “the Dignity of Work,” based on Catholic social
teaching, beginning with the famous “Rerum Novarum” encyclical of Pope Leo XIII
that defends the poor and stresses human rights and dignity. Reflect on other
excerpts from “Gaudium et Spes” and the US Bishops pastoral “Economic Justice
for All.”

Mission News Digest, and News from the USA Communities, test your “Religious
IQ,” and Xaverian outreach to Brazilian community in Boston. We also remember
Fr. Bruno Orru, missionary in Indonesia, who passed into Eternal Life on March
31, 2011, after a battle with cancer. His service in the US and his dedication
to forming young Xaverians in Indonesia, bring hope for the future.
