Statement regarding the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011 in Japan.

Regarding the devastating earthquake in Japan, the most powerful earthquake ever recorded there, and the tsunami which affected Sendai, the coastal city closest to the epicenter, the towns of Ofunato, Natori, Kesennuma, Minami-soma, Fukushima and Miyagi Prefecture, Fr. Piero Manni, SX, Regional Superior of the Xaverian Missionaries in Japan, writes:

“The area affected by the monstrous earthquake and by the repeated Tsunami waves lies mainly in the north of Tokyo on the side towards the Pacific Ocean.

Because there is continued earthquake activity of varying intensity we are not able to assess the compete magnitude of the destruction at this time. Moreover we are unable to communicate with our churches and religious institutions because both landline and cell telephones are not working and rail and auto routes are totally blocked.

As far as we know Xaverian missionaries are not currently in the afflicted area but we ask for your prayers for all our Japanese brethren who are now suffering because of this tragic situation.”

Xaverians who once served in the United States Province and who presently serve in Japan are Fr. Michael Luciano, SX, Fr. Renato Filippini, SX, Fr. Denny Wahyudi, SX, and Fr. Franco Sottocornola, SX.
